SANTA IS COMING TO TOWN (1ST TIME) !!!

I am busy planning for the FIRST (!!!) Santa Event. The heart of my business is families and a goal with all my sessions is to capture the joy that families bring to each other — and there really is no better time of year for that than the holiday season. The magic that is in the air is one I have always felt and getting to experience that (and document it!) with my clients is an honor that I do not take lightly.

5 Simple Tips for a Fun & Stress-Free Santa Mini Session

Santa photos are meant to be fun, magical, and memorable — but as a mom myself, I also know that getting everyone ready and out the door for photos can sometimes feel like a lot!

With my first Santa Experience at Sweet Tales Photography coming up, I wanted to share a few simple tips to help your family feel prepared, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the moment.

1. Make Santa a Positive Experience

This is one of the tips I always include in my Session Prep Guide, and it is something I truly believe can make a difference.

As a mama of four, I know that kids don’t always react the way we expect them to — especially when it comes to Santa! In fact, all four of my kids went through a stage where they were a little unsure or even scared of Santa. So if your little one isn’t immediately excited, don’t worry. You’re definitely not alone!

Before your session, try making Santa part of the fun. Read a favourite Christmas or Santa book together, look at pictures of Santa, or watch a Christmas show that includes him. Talk about the upcoming experience with excitement and let your child know that Santa will be there.

Sometimes, a little preparation and positive excitement can help make the experience feel much more familiar.

2. Give Yourself Plenty of Time

A little extra time can make a BIG difference on the day of your session.

Please give yourself enough time to get everyone dressed, gather anything you need, and arrive at the studio without feeling rushed. Our Santa sessions are 10 minutes each and scheduled back-to-back, so arriving late will unfortunately mean less time with Santa and fewer opportunities for photos.

We definitely don’t want you spending the whole drive saying, “Hurry, hurry, hurry!” 😄

You’re welcome to arrive a little early and take a moment to settle in. There will also be a bathroom available if needed.

3. Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time

One of my favourite parts of any photography session is styling!

Your Santa Experience is not only about meeting Santa — it’s also about creating beautiful images that you can look back on for years to come. Choosing your family’s outfits ahead of time can really help everything come together beautifully.

A few simple tips:

Keep your colours classic and timeless.
Neutrals, creams, browns, and traditional Christmas colours like red and green photograph beautifully. I would generally avoid neon or very bright colours, as they can become distracting and sometimes reflect colour onto skin tones.

Coordinate rather than match.
Your family doesn’t have to wear identical outfits! Choose a colour palette and let everyone’s outfits complement each other. I usually recommend keeping the family to around three main colours.

Pick a style and have fun with it.
There is no one “right” way to dress for your Santa Experience. Some families love cozy Christmas pajamas, while others prefer dressier outfits, sweaters, dresses, or even a little sparkle. I’ve seen all kinds of styles photograph beautifully!

The key is simply to choose a direction that feels like your family and carry that style throughout everyone’s outfits.

4. Bring Something Special

If your child has a favourite little item, consider bringing it along!

A favourite stuffed animal, Christmas book, letter, or another special item can give your child something familiar to hold or share with Santa. It can also be a sweet way to capture your child’s personality.

And this year, I’m especially excited to add something new to the Santa Experience!

Each child will receive a special letter from Santa with a wish list to fill out and bring along to their session. 🎅

It gives them something exciting to look forward to and makes the experience feel even more personal.

5. Most Importantly… Just Go With It!

This might be my biggest piece of advice.

Don’t worry about getting the “perfect” Santa photo.

Sometimes children are excited. Sometimes they’re shy. Sometimes they want to stay close to Mom or Dad. And sometimes… they are absolutely NOT interested in Santa. 😂

And you know what? That’s okay.

Some of the most meaningful photographs aren’t the perfectly posed smiles. They are the little moments that show who your child really is at that age — the way a big brother comforts a nervous little sister, the way your child looks at Santa, or even the unexpected moments that make everyone laugh.

These are the memories you’ll look back on years from now.

So come with your expectations, but leave a little room for the unexpected.

Let your children be themselves, let the moment unfold naturally, and most of all — enjoy the experience together.

Because one day, these little Christmas memories will be the ones you miss the most. ❤️
